Who We Are

United is a community of faith made up of people from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds--all brought together by our faith in Jesus Christ!  We come together to worship, learn, and serve.

Wherever you go, God is sending you, wherever you are, God has put you there.  He has a purpose in your being there.  Christ who dwells in you has something He wants to do through you where you are.  We believe this and live in His grace and love and power. In our family of faith you will find caring, loving people. There’s a place for you at United!

Presbyterians affirm that God comes to us with grace and love in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose for us so that we might have eternal and abundant life in him. As Christ’s disciples, called to ministry in his name, we seek to continue his mission of teaching the truth, feeding the hungry, healing the broken, and welcoming strangers. God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, giving us the energy, intelligence, imagination, and love to be Christ’s faithful disciples in the world.

Presbyterian refers to the governmental structure of the church, led by Presbyers (from New Testament Greek meaning Elders).  Elders provide the spiritual leadership of the church.  We also have a board of Deacons to provide care for the members and community.  Our board of Trustees care for the buildings and grounds, keeping them in excellent shape as our center of mission into the community.

Laura Walters Baskett, Pastor

Laura came to United Presbyterian in March, 2016, to serve as Interim Pastor here. She began her ministry in Little Rock, AR after an undergraduate degree in Chinese history and seminary in Richmond, VA. Her journey in ministry has taken her many places, from parish ministry to China, to hospital, university, and hospice chaplaincy, and now back to the church. Since 1998, she and her husband, Tom, have lived in DeLand with their son, Will. Laura has been involved in Presbytery and Synod work as well as has having served as a delegate to the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly in 2014. She has also been active in community service, outreach, and ecumenical and multifaith work. Laura is eager to see where Christ’s love will lead us together as we seek to “do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.” (Mic. 6.8)
